Range Rover Sport, Discovery 3 and 4 Spare Wheel Theft

We have seen an ever increasing trend of Range Rover Sport and Discovery 3 and 4 vehicles being brought in for service and finding no spare wheel attached to the underside of the vehicle. Unfortunately, the spare wheel has been stolen, often whilst the vehicle has been parked outside the owner’s house or on their driveway over night.

In 99% of cases the owner has been unaware of the problem. It is also not very pleasant having to advise the owner of such a theft, you are always thinking what is going through their mind when you tell them, probably their first thoughts being that you have either damaged it, or removed it.

It is a very simple and quick process for thieves to remove the spare wheel. All that is needed is something to cut the winch cable that holds the spare wheel in place under the vehicle. The entire operation can be carried out in less than a minute, makes no noise and leaves the owner having the unnecessary expense of purchasing a new wheel, tyre and winch cable.

We at Rovertune Ltd advise Range Rover Sport and Discovery 3/4 owners to check that their spare wheel is still in place and also keep checking on a regular basis, as you do not want the embarrassment of finding it has gone after suffering a sudden puncture.

A solution to combat this has been designed by Land Rover whereby the winch cable now runs inside a strengthened metal tube making it very difficult for thieves to cut and gain access to the cable. We advise affected vehicle owners to replace the existing winch cable with the newer version as this is a very cheap option when you consider the cost of possible breakdown recovery (having suffered a puncture and no spare wheel) and then the expense of replacing a costly new alloy wheel and tyre.

We will be happy to install the modified winch system to your vehicle. Please contact us at any time to arrange a fitting.
