Land Rover introduce the Range Rover Velar to sit between the Evoque and Sport

Land Rover has very recently introduced a stunning new vehicle into its premium Range Rover line-up called the Range Rover Velar. The new vehicle was premiered at the Design Museum in London just prior to its unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show where it was classed as one of the best new vehicles to be introduced.

The Velar is the new addition to the Range Rover family filling the space (and price) between the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport and is available to order immediately and should start to appear on UK roads during the summer of 2017.

This is the fourth member of the Range Rover family and the first vehicle ever to be launched and displayed at the Design Museum. However, there has been a president in that back in the 1970’s the original Range Rover was displayed in the Louvre Museum in Paris. Not so co-incidentally, when these early Range Rovers were developed as prototypes in 1969 they were tested under the codename VELAR.

Land Rover claim the new  vehicle has a spacious and luxurious interior of elegant simplicity with special details such as ‘hidden-until-lit’ controls and a new cutting edge infotainment system called Touch Pro Duo.

How Range Rover vehicles have developed over the past near 50 years with now more focus on design, innovation and attention to detail, not only in advanced technologies but now incorporating new super-slim matrix laser LED headlights and for the first time flush deployable door handles and Burnished Copper-coloured detailing to the front bumper blades and fender vents. To us, this new addition is taking Land Rover to a more road biased trend with claims of exceptional on-road performance, whilst still keeping its renowned off-road capabilities.

The Velar was created from a ‘clean sheet’ using Lightweight Aluminium Architecture making it apparently, safer, stronger, lighter and for the environmentalists more cleaner (greener) and fuel efficient. A new four-corner suspension system to radically improve comfort and control will also be available.

Unique in the segment of ‘premium vehicles’ Land Rover are offering as an alternative to leather a premium textile seat material complimented with Suede cloth inserts. Apparently, as easy to clean as leather. It will be interesting to see how this alternative seating material sells when compared with the now traditionally accepted leather interior.

The Range Rover Velar will be available with five new engines , a 2.0 litre 16 valve Ingenuim diesel delivering 180PS with variable geometry turbo, another 2.0 litre 16 valve Ingenuim diesel delivering 240PS with series sequential turbos, a V6 24 valve DOHC diesel with parallel sequential turbos, a brand new Inline 4 cylinder 16 valve Ingenium petrol engine delivering 250PS with twin-scroll turbo and at the top of the range a 24 valve DOHC V6 3.0 litre V6 petrol engine with Twin Vortex supercharger.

Press reviews from the launch have now started to appear in the major motoring journals. You can read those here by clicking on the names of the various magazines. Autocar and Auto Express.
